NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research - Postdoc fellowship (2 years)

NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research (180 employees) aims to increase the understanding of processes and effects of climate change, of the composition of the atmosphere, of air quality and of hazardous substances. The institute holds a strong position both on the national and international level within its core fields of research.

Postdoc fellowship (2 years)

Frist: 28.05.2017

Atmospheric source-receptor relationships of “new” airborne organic contaminants in Nordic and Arctic ecosystems

NILU is seeking a highly motivated Post Doc (PD) candidate to take part in a research project on monitoring and modelling of new airborne organic contaminants. Different factors affect how organic contaminants once released into the environment distribute and accumulate, enter various food-chains, and potentially cause harmful effects in ecosystems over time. Sound control strategies thus require the determination of the quantitative relationship between emissions and human exposure.

The overall goal of this PD project is to better understandinitial relationships between atmospheric emissions of selected airborne organic contaminants, and levels and trends in the atmosphere of Nordic and Arctic environments through complementary monitoring and modelling studies. The PD project is part of a larger initiative, and the overall  research project is financed by the Research Council of Norway, and includes collaboration with universities in Oslo, Toronto (Canada) as well as Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The candidate will be located at the NILU offices in Kjeller. The position is available for a limited period of 2 years, affiliated to the Department for Environmental Chemistry (MILK). The successful candidate is expected to start this early fall and to carry out the analysis, interpretation and publication of results in close collaboration with other project participants.

The following requirements to the applicants are essential:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g. environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry). A strong interest and experience with relevant analytical work, ideally chemical analysis of organic contaminants in air, is a clear advantage.
  • A good command of both written and spoken English is required.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Take active part in field work.
  • Perform analytical work at the NILU chemical laboratory.
  • Be involved in relevant modeling activities to support interpretation of data.
  • Work both independently as well as part of a team.
